HS Contest Events
The Events young mathematicians can participate in are designed with intentionality to provide opportunity for a variety of styles of thinking and mathematical skills.

Team Project
Teams of students work together to solve a multi-faceted socially significant problem for several months and present their findings to their peers and evaluators.
Team Make-up: 2-6 students from the same school

Topical Problems
Individuals or teams complete doing modified multiple choice problems from various topics covering mathematical strands.
Team Make-up: Up to 3 students from three different grade levels, students may "play up".
Individuals: Compete for top honors or top at their grade level.

Two 30 minute sessions at in-person Regionals, 1 hour session at Virtual Regional Site

Team Problem
Teams of students work together in an applied math problem and present an answer for multiple parts.
Team Make-up: Up to 3 students from three different grade levels, students may "play up". Students may compete as an individual against the teams.

The Knowdown
The spelling bee of mathematics!
Individuals compete in up to three rounds of short problems.
Round 1: Mental math
Round 2: Pencil and paper, no calculator
Round 3: Pencil and paper, SAT approved calculator suggested
Team Make-up: up to 3 students from each school compete as individuals

Time varies, held at the end of the Event for Regionals and State
Qualifying for State
Team Project: Qualifying for state is based on a cut score to ensure at least a percentage of teams qualify.
Team Problem: 1st place for each Regional Event and each Division (I and II)*, then a cut score from across regions invites additional teams to state.
Topical Problems Teams: 1st place for each Regional Event and each Division (I and II)*, then a cut score from across regions invites additional teams to state.
Topical Problems Individuals: Top three scorers and top scores at each grade level in each Region are invited to state.
The Knowdown: 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each Region is invited to State. An alternate is also determined in Region.
Playing Up
8th, 9th, 10th, 11th may play up grade levels for the entirety of the competition for all team events.
Example:
A team may be made up of three 10th graders, if one plays up as 11th grade, and the third plays as a 12th grader.
*Divisions are determined by WIAA classification. Division I includes schools designated as 4A, 3A, 2A. Division II includes 1A, 1B, 2B.
Ad Hoc Teams at State
If a team member qualifies for only one or two events, they may join other team members from other schools (assigned at the event). These teams complete against other Ad-hoc teams for awards
